World Down Syndrome Day

4/8/16

Today is the day that some in the world have seen fit to change the virtue and value of the lives of those with Down syndrome. You can count our family in on this day! There is so much that comes to mind for Dylan and our family, that highlights our appreciation and gratefulness for Down syndrome!

Over the last almost 4 years our journey with “disability” in the context of raising a growing and young family we often wondered what the impact of Dylan’s life would be? Would he be able to play, grow and learn like other’s his age? Would he be accepted by others; would he be bullied? There are many other questions that can flood the mind of a parent in the midst of disability. A parent’s response to the ongoing challenges brought on by a child’s diagnosis directly impacts every relationship in the family. By God’s grace over the last four years we have been able to see, hear, and experience the impact that Down syndrome has had on Dylan first hand. He is nothing but pure joy, and has love written all over his face. When people ask me “how is he doing”? This is my response: “He is doing amazing! He will go far in life because he is one determined little boy. Dylan will reach his own goals just like your child will and on his own time.” I will push him because I am his mom and I only want the best for him. He will do things that he wants to do, he will play the sports he wants to play and he will learn the way he wants to learn and follow every dream that may come his way. Just because he is different, does not mean he will be anything but perfect!

There are so many little ways that their character and worldview has been impacted by disability. They recognize the good in everyone and always have a smile on their face! Disability is obviously in our midst, but Dylan is just Dylan, he is our primary existence as an individual, our son, and a loving human being that god created. We know that we have a long way to go in our parenting, but it is no different than any other parent in the world. It has been a great encouragement to see that disability has not served as a wedge between our family and the character of God. No, far from it! Down syndrome, and disability in general, has been nothing but pure joy and more love then I could have ever imagined! He is our joy, our love and the center of what keeps this family together. He teaches us to work hard every day no matter what, to have patience, and to always see the good in everyone. Our family has more love because of our sweet Dylan!

So on this day our family stands blessed, proud, changed, and more in love with what Down syndrome has brought to our lives. This is all in part of God creating Dylan together especially for our family. If you are the parent, family member or friend of a person with Down syndrome, you should be contemplating how to celebrate one of the most important days of the year: World Down Syndrome Day. 03/21 is the day set aside to celebrate the triplication of chromosome 21 that is the genetic composition of people with this condition.

This special event has been created to generate awareness about the abilities and possibilities of people with Down syndrome. As a special fact, it is estimated that around 6 million people in the world live with this condition and we are all more alike than we know. Happy Down Syndrome Day!

Milestones and beyond

3/17/16

Milestones....I am sure that's something we are all familiar with? In our house it's always been a big deal, it's been something that we celebrate because it's a huge step in Dylan's development and steps he is taking in his daily life! I am pretty darn proud of this kid right now. He has been making leaps and bounds in his all around growth! But one of the biggest challenges for us has always bee...n his eating. That's eating independently for more then 10 minutes and with out throwing his food😂 and eating with a fork and spoon with out mommy and daddy having to feed him. Well this kid the last two weeks has over achieved all of that!!! Sitting through all of his meals, feeding himself and being such a big boy! But up until this point the struggles are real, the work is hard and when we are tired and drained we still work. We work everyday so that this boy can have an amazing life! But what gives me even more joy is seeing how hard Dylan works and always with a smile. Praise your kids always, love them always and let them know they are great! Be there for them, love them and always tell them they are special! Your dedication in your kids will always be the greatest gift you can give them!

Challengers League

3/9/16

About a month ago I was introduced to a baseball team in our city called the Challengers League. This is a baseball team with in the league for all kids with special needs. I was so excited when I found out about it because I had been wanting to get Dylan into something to help a little more with his social skills. This is also great because it will get us out of the house and to meet other families in our community!

This program was created about 12 years ago from a great Man. His son was born with special needs and he wanted his son to be able to enjoy sports just like any other kid out there. So he started this team! His son is now on the adult challengers league and thriving in baseball. He actually plays on a typical team once in awhile too. I love that we live in such a great society today where our kiddos can be loved just like all the other kids and grow up to be awesome! I was a little nervous signing Dylan up, as Greg and I feel he is just one year shy of really being able to understand and follow directions... but we went with it. It was the best decision we ever made. He loves it and we are so thrilled to be apart of this team! And of course we can't forget about our miss Haylee. If she had it her way she would be right on the field with everyone else!

Love is in the air

2/24/16

When I was little my parents always made Valentine's Day such a fun and loving day for my sister and I. They used to decorate the house pink and red, and get us the cutest little gifts. My dad would even get us flowers. Greg and I have never really been a big Valentine's couple. I love to go to dinner and exchange cute cards, but sometimes I feel it is a little over rated. Love should be every day! But now having kids I want to make it just as special as it was for me growing up.

This year I decorated the house, got them some cute gifts and we all had a special dinner as a family. The best part of this holiday was Dylan's school had the sweetest Valentine's dance. They decorated the whole room, had lots of fun music and exchanged little valentine cards to his class. This to me was the best LOVE day I could of ever asked for!

She was so excited to go to brother's school

Health And Beyond

2/19/16

Well I feel like it's been a whirlwind over here in our home the past few months. It's been awhile since I have blogged and I feel like I am saying that more and more these days. It's just been a pretty crazy start of the year for us. Some days I just can't keep my head above water.

This year I promised myself that I would really focus on my health and more of me. I can't even remember the last time I really felt good about myself and had energy. I would always tell myself that this would be the year and I always failed. Something got in the way or life just happened. But this year was really going to be the year! The past few months I have taken a total different journey then I have ever taken before. If I look back just a few short months ago when one of my dearest and child hood friends asked me to do this challenge with her, I would have never imagined my life where It is today!. I don't even want to think of this as day 24 because I cannot wait to continue this amazing and healthy life that makes me feel so good inside and out. I was scared and nervous to start this challenge, but excited all at the same time. I was exci...ted to do something for myself for once. I took this on knowing this would be out of my comfort zone, but I wanted a challenge, I wanted a better me emotionally and physically. I wanted that for my kids, my husband, my family and friends! I have had goals and resolutions for the last (I can't even count anymore) that when I wrote that list down I never had one of them checked off. I knew 2016 was going to be different!

This year I promised myself that I would make changes-changes that would require me to step out of my comfort zone and do some things that would feel different, things that were not in my daily habits, but I knew how I felt and I wanted better! So I leaped and I built my wings on the way down. It's taught me to chase my dreams and never let the "naysayers" and "skeptics" stop me from following my gut intuition. 80% is based on your why, the other 20% is how? You have to have the desire for change. Whether you think you can or can't you are right. If you want to achieve in life its all about your mindset and the belief in yourself and in other people around you! The best part of this journey is that my beautiful mom who did it right along side me. I am so proud of her and how far she has come with this challenge. She has never glowed more then she does today! I have also met so many people along the way, who have supported me, encouraged me, and have been my greatest cheerleaders and will continue on my new life of health and AdvoCare! I am so thankful I gave this challenge a shot, because what I thought were going to be the longest 24 days of my life have been the most amazing days of my life. 24 short days that equal a lifetime of happiness....

Student of the month-My Super Star

1/13/16

There are moments in life that we will never ever forget, and this one today tops all of them! I am shouting from the roof top that Dylan got student of the month for Decemberjust when this mama was so scared for him to start school and spread his wings, he has proven that there is nothing to be afraid of and he has got this school thing in the bag! Dylan received his student of the month for mak...ing awesome strides in communication, imitation, following routine and just all around Awesomeness!!!! I love this boy so much, and he has been making leaps and bounds. He works hard everyday with school and therapy and I could not be more proudThis is just another example of just how much this sweet boy gives me the courage to strive for my best and give 100% at everything I do in life every single day. And today I have realized it's not the number of times we have these moments, it's about the small things that lead to great things in our lives. Instead of focusing on the bigger picture, we need to have focus on doing those small things in a loving way. Have faith in your children no matter what, spend time with them, teach them and love them because they are smart and will do great things in life!

Fish and More Fish

A few weeks ago, just before school was about to begin we took the kids to LEGOLAND near our house. We did not take them to the park as I think they are still just a little to little. We ended up taking them to the Aquarium. It was not what I expected, but we made the most of it. It was a short one and made it out in about 20 minutes. The kids loved everything about the animals and all of the glowing lights. We decided to take them through it again so they could enjoy it a little bit longer. I just loved seeing Dylan's little face light up with so much happiness when he saw the fish. He loves "fishies" and of course Haylee was running everywhere. I swear I need to get a leash for that girl. She is so fast and just wants to be on the go whenever we are out. I love spending time with my family, and enjoying fun things with the kids!
